Privacy Policy

Plain English, not legal advice

What follows describes accurately what this site does with your data. It has not been checked by a lawyer, so treat it as a plain-English account rather than a formal legal document.

Hosting

This site runs on WordPress.com, owned by Automattic. They collect server logs and their own analytics on every visit, which is governed by their privacy policy rather than this one.

Comments

Comments are open because arguing about coffee is half the point. You need to be signed in to leave one. If you do, WordPress stores the name and email on your account, your website if you add one, the comment itself, and your IP address and browser user agent.

Your email is never published and never sold. It is used to show your avatar and, if a comment needs checking, to reply to you.

Your first comment is held for approval before it appears. Once one has been approved, later comments appear right away. Spam filtering is handled by Akismet, which is also Automattic, and that means your comment and the details above are sent to their service to be checked.

Avatars come from Gravatar. WordPress sends a scrambled version of your email address to Gravatar to look one up. If you have no Gravatar account, nothing comes back and you get a default image.

Comments stay up unless you ask for yours to be removed. Use the contact page and I will delete it.

Email subscriptions

If you subscribe with your email, that address is stored by WordPress.com’s subscription service (Jetpack), which sends each new post as it is published. You get a confirmation email first and nothing is sent until you confirm. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Your address is not sold or shared with anyone else, including Black Rifle.

Analytics

The only visitor statistics on this site are WordPress.com’s built-in stats (Jetpack Stats). There is no Google Analytics or tag manager. If that changes, this page changes first.

Outbound links

Some posts link to Black Rifle Coffee Company products. Those links carry a referral tag so Black Rifle can see the visit came from here. Once you click through, you are on their site under their privacy policy. See the disclosure.

Cookies

Leaving a comment sets cookies that remember your name and email so you do not have to type them again. Logging in sets cookies for the session. WordPress.com sets its own cookies for hosting and statistics; Automattic’s cookie policy lists them by name.

Your rights and how to reach me

You can ask what data is held about you, ask for it corrected, or ask for it deleted. Depending where you live, you may have a legal right to all three. Either way I will do it. Ask through the contact page.
